Matt Dunne
Matt Dunne is a Melbourne-based photographer, publisher, and founder of Tall Poppy Press. As a photographer, his work explores the current state of the environment in Australia as a legacy of colonial thinking and combative settler attitudes. He has published widely, including two monographs - The Killing Sink (VOID, 2021) and Ten Eighty (Tall Poppy Press, 2026) - as well as a selection of self-published zines and handmade books. His work has been featured in the Washington Post, the Guardian and more, and exhibited in Australia, France and the USA
As a publisher, Matt's work focuses on bringing the best Australia photography to a global stage, through making textural, well-edited and affordable publications. He sees working in Australia as an opportunity, not as a problem, and develops compelling photography books with a diverse range of emerging, established and under-appreciated artists. Recent books include We Were Just Little Boys, a story about the Stolen Generation in Australia, and a group of survivors, which seeks to bring viewers as close to the survivors as possible, as well as To Be Developed, To Be Continued - which examines the twin transitions of tween to teen and middle age to older age in a mother/daughter through photographs that are visceral, playful, fuzzy and raw.
Finally, Matt is a practiced teacher, having spent the first fifteen years of his career working in schools and universities. He regularly guest lectures at universities such as the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Photography Studies College and Northern College of the Arts, as well as running workshops for students at these institutions too. He focuses primarily on working with adult learnings, hosting workshops in Melbourne through Tall Poppy Press, in Perth in partnership with Perth Centre for Photography and with a range of festivals and galleries.
In 2024, he was lucky enough to host a zine workshop with Harry Culy and Jane Wilcox as part of Photobook NZ - it was a blast!
Matt will be tutoring the Photobook Exploder workshop with Solomon Mortimer at Photobook/NZ as well as the Zine-making workshop with Harry Culy and Jane Wilcox. He’ll also be holding a Critical Practice Review where you can get one-on-one feedback about your project.
