Critical Practice Reviews
Critical Practice Reviews offer a unique opportunity to have a session with a highly experienced practitioner to discuss your project one-on-one. This year we’re delighted to offer sessions with three of our international guests – Martha Naranjo Sandoval, Erin Lee and Matt Dunne.
Martha is a US, Brooklyn-based visual artist, photographer, publisher, and cataloguer from Mexico City. Her latest book Small Death (pub MACK) was a finalist in the Paris Photo-Aperture Photobook Awards. Martha manages the International Center of Photography’s Library and works in the publishing side of Dashwood Books. She is also the founder and director of the editorial project Matarile Ediciones, which publishes work by artists who are immigrants or part of a recent diaspora. Read more about Martha.
Erin Lee teaches at The Australian College of the Arts and Photography Studies College and runs workshops for diverse creative communities. Erin is also a self-published photobook artist and after studying the artistry of bookbinding, her books often incorporate archival material and handmade elements. Her most recent book The Crimson Thread was shortlisted for the LUMA Arles Rencontres Dummy Book Award, Premio Eloi Gimeno for Photobooks, Encontros da Imagem Photobook Awards and The Australian & New Zealand Photobook Awards. Read more about Erin.
Matt Dunne is a Melbourne-based photographer, publisher, and founder of Tall Poppy Press. As a photographer, his work explores the current state of the environment in Australia as a legacy of colonial thinking and combative settler attitudes. He has published widely, including two monographs - The Killing Sink (VOID, 2021) and Ten Eighty (Tall Poppy Press, 2026) - as well as a selection of self-published zines and handmade books. He is also a practiced teacher who lectures and runs a wide variety of workshops. Read more about Matt.
What will happen in a Critical Practice Review?
This is a unique opportunity to have a 30 minute conversation about your work with an international artist. You can bring any project you’re working on, or an overview of your work that will fit a 30 minute session. Prints, books, PDF’s, laptops and tablets are all ways to present your work. The review will consist of both talking about what you are doing and showing your work.
Critical Practice Reviews are valuable for artists at all stages of their career.
Some outcomes of a review may be:
- feedback on projects, guidance and direction
- direct and indirect opportunities
- references and connections
